Mobile Number portability service (MNP) , freedom to switch mobile operators with out changing mobile phone numbers.

What is Number Portability?
Number Portability allows everyone to keep their existing mobile numbers when they switch operators. Actually it gives subscribers the freedom to choose operators based on any criteria. Even if you switch your operator you won’t loose your mobile number. So now mobile industry will be the ” survival of the fittest”
BSNL would be the most worse hit by this feature since there are a lot of customers who switched to BSNL for the better tariff plan but got irritated with the customer support.Also nowadays customers are more looking for value added services like ring back tunes,ring tones, SMS features, Internet etc which are provided much better by many other private operators.

Cost of Mobile Number portability services
There is a very minimal cost associated for this service. it may be less than Rs 50 in India and it is a one time fee.

Who regulate this service
In India it is administered by TRAI

When will it come to effect
DoT says it should be available from 31st December, 2009 onwards.. lets wait and see
