numberMobile phone number will remain 10 digit in India for the time being. Department of Telecom has put on hold of its plan to make it 11 digit. The DoT had recently prepared a draft notification proposing that all mobiles numbers in India to adopt a 11 digit pattern by prefixing ’9′ . This plan faced resistance from telecom service providers because of many technical feasibility issues.

Alternative plans in discussion – new number starts with 7 or 8

Due to the resistance in the proposed plan , DoT is reviewing alternative propoasl submitted by cellular operators association of India. They suggested to 7 and 8 number to start with instead of existing number 9. So if this plan is accepted , new subscribers will get the number starting wit 7 or 8, this will lead to give 2,000 million more numbering resources which is sufficient for next few years.

  1. This is something good………. Have 10 digit numbers is much better then 11…….. :)

  2. Ten digit numbers are definately better than the eleven digit numbers. And numbers starting from digit 8 are already available in Delhi. As far as I know, Aircel is the only service provider (at this time) which is distributing numbers with the first digit as 8. Hope that helps :) You can use this as an update in your post as well ;)
