How to format / erase your external hard disk (HDD) on MAC OS

mac logoMAC OS have its utility in-build for formatting or erasing a hard disk. For newbies, formatting will erase all the data on your hard disk which is almost unrecoverable. So plan to take a backup before performing this action.mac format

Steps to format  (erase) your hard disk on MAC

  • Open the System Drive “Macintosh HD”
  • Click on Applications –> Utilities
  • Select ‘Disk Utility’
  • Select the drive which you need to format
  • click on ‘Erase’ tab on the right
  • It will display the options for ‘Erase’
  • Select ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled)’ as the volume format (most of the case it would be enough)
  • Provide a name for your Hard drive
  • click Erase button.
