How to stop windows automatic update and restart – disable windows 7 auto restart

If you have been using windows xp or windows 7 for atleast six month, you had seen this irritating restart request from windows 7 and XP after completing its update. This keep on appearing on your screen every 15 minutes even if you select to restart later. There are few hacks to avoid this annoying windows automatic updates restart dialog.

Option # 1
Go to process explorer by clicking CTRL + ALT + DEL , search for wuauclt.exe and kill that process.

Option # 2
Go to Start –> Run –> CMD , and type the following command

sc stop wuauserv

Option # 3
Go to Start –> Run –> CMD, and run Group policy editor by typing  gpedit.msc on command prompt

Go to computer configuration –> administrative templates –> windows components and select Windows update

Now click on No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations’.
Select ” Enabled” and click ok
