IPV4 is over , IPv4 issues, IPv6 IPv4 FAQ, how to switch to IPv6, device which support ipv6

IPV4 is over , no more new IP address on internet , not really, we have ipv6

As you see the heading, there is no ipv4 ips available to allocate. Last set of ip address batch was distributed by the ICANN , authority which governs the ip address last Thursday, 3rd Feb, 2011. There is no more IP address available in IPv4 series.

So few questions which may arise here are

What is IPv4

IP address which are in the format 192.168.2.1 or 172.0.0.1 are known as IPv4 ip address. These IP addresses are used in internet for communication between devices. IP address is linked to the MAC address and each data packet is send based on these address. There were 4.3 billion possible IP address which ran out of stock.

What is IPv6

IPv6 addresses are 128-bit numbers
A typical example of an IPv6 address is
2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334.

IPV6 wil have 340 undecillion address so it is much more than IPv4

Is that all IPv4 address are used

That is an interesting question, because all this 4.3 billion IP address are not been actively used. There are millions of IP address which are not used but which are been held by different organizations for their future use. Due to scarcity few organizations like Stanford, BBN, Interop, and the Defense Department had returned their unused IP address to ICANN. But still there are many IP address which are been kept unused by many organizations.

so  Is this a very critical issue for now?

NO , right now it is not an issues, IPv6 is well supported by Windows XP service Pack 1 onwards, Mac OSX , iPhones, new Android phones etc have the capacity to utilize IPv6. so for now business is as usual and there is nothing to panic.
